Over the past couple weeks the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has become an internet sensation. Stars from the world of
film, television, music and sports have teamed up via multiple social media websites to help raise money to support the
efforts to find a cure for ALS. The premise is that once challenged, you have 24 hours to respond to the challenge by
filming yourself getting doused with a bucket full of ice water. If you fail to respond, you must donate $100 to the ALS
Foundation. However, those who respond to the challenge, and film it, in turn get to challenge some one else.
What started out on the national level has worked its way down to the state and local level. Two Springdale High School
football coaches were challenged by their peers earlier this week. Head Coach Shane Patrick was challenged by Jeff
Bowerman, Head Coach at Lakeside Junior High in Springdale, AR and Scott Reed, Head Coach at El Dorado High
School in El Dorado, AR. Also, the Bulldogs Offensive Coordinator, Mark Whatley, was challenged by Bo Hembree, Head
Coach at Warren High School in Warren, AR.
Coach Patrick and Coach Whatley decided to complete their challenge at the conclusion of the picture day for the
Bulldogs. Before getting soaked Coach Patrick issued a challenge to Randy Coleman, Head Coach at Jonesboro High
School in Jonesboro, AR and to John King, Head Coach at Longview High School in Longview, TX. Coach Whatley
challenged his longtime friend Tommy Tice, Head Coach at Huntsville High School in Huntsville, AR. As you can see,
there was no shortage of players willing to help both coaches support a great cause.
The ALS Foundation has reported that over the past few weeks donations have topped 13 million dollars, in large part to
the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. To find out more about the ALS Foundation please visit www.alsa.org.
